Arms laden with several shopping bags, her school bag, and a larger-than-she-really-liked-carrying purse, Maki shouldered her way into Bluebell and instantly felt grateful to be there. She was hungry, had skipped breakfast because there had been nothing appetizing in her cupboards. Now she was looking forward to a nice, early, lunch.
She spotted Nino sitting behind the bar on her way toward her favorite table, and sent him a wave and a smile. "Hi! I was hoping you'd be here today."
Nino was half on his feet the second the doors opened, but he hadn't bothered to look up. Brian was gatehring up the menus, anyway. But Nino did look when the new customer spoke. He grinned.
"Hi Maki-chan. Brian, take a break. She's mine." Nino took the menus from his co-worker, sending him off with a pat to the back, and set them on the table in front. "Had a busy morning?"
Maki laughed hearing Nino claim her table for himself. Good, it would give her a better chance to talk to him. Once she'd situated the plethora of bags around her feet, beneath the table, and a couple on one of the chairs beside her, Maki finally let herself answer Nino.
"You would not believe the morning I've had. Lots of shopping. And lucky too! I called the radio station this morning, to request a song, and I managed to win myself tickets to a Yankees game on the 21st! But the game is at 7, and I have a night class." Maki pulled a rather disappointed face, and tugged the menu closer to herself, even though really she already knew exactly what she wanted. She had a weakness for the potato leek soup. "I don't suppose you want them? I'd hate for them to go to waste."
Nino perked up immediately. His eyes probably sparked. (They did that sometimes, when he got excited.) Had he just heard Yankees tickets? Like he could ever turn those down. And Aiba would go with him, if Ohno didn't like baseball. He really ought to ask Ohno about that.
"Only if you're sure you can't go. It'd be a shame to see them go to waste. Have you been to the new stadium at all?"
Theoretically he should be asking if she wanted a drink, but he'd get around to it. It didn't look like Maki was in a hurry, and he rarely saw her outside of the cafe.
