She’s a brain… trapped in the body of a game show hostess

So, a few weeks ago, I pulled Say Anything out of the Target bargain bin, not ever having seen it before, basing the purchase pretty much only on some comments to a really old post of mine.

And last night, I finally watched it. And now, I’m watching it again. I’m not totally convinced I like it, but I do know I’ll be fascinated while I’m working ( Read more... )

The whole movie’s so uneven. Is there a director’s cut somewhere? Or am I missing the point?

I remember reading an interview with Cameron Crowe, who directed this movie. It was his first directing job, and he said didn't always know exactly what he was doing, although he learned as he went along. That might be why it seems uneven.

It's one of my favorite movies. It's especially fun to watch now and see all the actors who were unknown then but are known now.

I know! The cast of Frasier! Very cool. I think I really like it. Especially the songs about Joe. Because it sounds like something I would have done in high school.

And I think it's kind of awesome its Cameron Crowe movie ::has shameful Jerry McGuire love::

Ooh, poor Carlos. You know, I was thinking more of boys I knew in high school who wore Joy Division t-shirts and used hash pipes instead of bongs (because pipes are British, dude), but I guess rock stars can fit the bill too.

Let me first say that "Say Anything..." is one of my all-time favorite movies, i swallow all its flaws and happily gobble up Lloyd. I have posters, t-shirts, if i could have a cuddle-me doll, i would.

That being said, *The whole movie’s so uneven.Yes, yes it is. And also? As much as i adore Lloyd to itty bitty pieces? If i had a boyfriend that all he wanted in life was to "date me" or do kickboxing? As endearing as that was when i was, say, 16, once i went to college, the boy would've lasted for about 6 months before i realized he just watches tv and eats all my food. I mean, i realize, ideal at the time and i shouldn't look at it from this perspective as it was never meant to be, like all John hughes movies(yes, i know this was Cameron Crowe, but they are in the same vein, just better music). Suspension of disbelief or maturity, blah blah blah. So, i do try to just focus on the bits that still make me melt, that i would love a man to stand outside my window and unabashedly blast Peter Gabriel, who would start shaking because we ( ... )

And hee, i didn't get to add about your nephew! Aw, so cute. I get the laziness :P Is Toby interested in an older woman? She's just going on 6 months, light brown hair, grey-blue eyes, killer smile, and loves to suck on your hand?

Actually, young Mister Tobes is already infatuated with an older woman... my sister's friend's baby, a five month old who treats him with disdain and can't even be bothered to turn her head in his direction. And its so sad, because poor Tobes just stares at her and smiles and reaches out to touch her and she just doesn't care.

OMG. Tobes is Lloyd, isn't he.

::horror::

You know what? You've just clarified something for me. Say Anything was probably one of the more realistic end of high school movies out there- I loved the first scene, because the male school captain of my Year 12 famously sang Sometimes by Britney at our Farewell asembly, so it just really struck a chord with me, right from the beginning (aside from the obvious humour). And Lloyd kind of looks like a boy I, er hem, knew at high school, and he was, er hem, a dickhead.

So I was trapped between realism and the weehee! attitude I kind of approach the Breakfast Club, 16 Candles etc with.

You smart girl Ali. Me likey ;)

That's pretty much what I thought- there was no real tone or plot. I was so disappointed. Most of the people I know love it, consider Lloyd the perfect man...and both bored me. Plus, Ione's character's relationship with her father is seriously skeevy.

I adore your Breakfast Club icon so much it hurts. It's going to be on TV here Tuesday night, and even though I've got it taped I've been ringing friends who might not have seen it to make sure they watch it and don't miss the fabulousness.

And the father daughter relationship bothered me too. It's healthy to hide things from your parents. I think. That sentence came out really really badly.

I think I can see why people would adore this movie (and I adored parts of it), but its always reassuring to know someone else has reservations too, so thanks sweetie!
