Yesterday was the Stampede Parade, and the first anniversary of "less sleep, more muffin!" We didn't stay up late to make muffins this year, though; we got home from Drumheller at 12:30 and were almost ready to leave the house at 5:30, so we didn't really feel like taking more time to bake. Besides, my sister made the muffins this year. My mom ( Read more... )

I think a big part of the problem with the kids in the audience etc. is the fact that nobody goes to the theatre or the symphony or the ballet anymoreI mean, my brothers and I grew up with that stuff; not only are we all musicians and singers, but we used to do musicals with the community music & drama society each spring when we lived in Rocky Mountain House. Believe you me, there are plenty of kids in RMH who know how to behave during live performances; the Northern Crossing shows are a mainstay of the culture there. (Speaking of which, if my car and my budget will handle it, I should look into going out there for their annual Christmas show. See who's still around from the 'good old days'. Probably Jonathan will go with me; he went to see the musical this past spring ( ... )

Horse Poop Bingo!

Hee! My FFA chapter in high school did a similar fundraiser every year at the Fall Festival. It was called Barnyard Bingo and we'd bring a sheep or goat in to the fest and put a grid in the pen.

I guess no theater for me anymore. You would be so appalled at me. I take my kids to the back and go pee during the performance. That's two rules broken already.

Dad drove by the Bingo again when trying to park to come to the grounds and apparently it said it was the 9th Annual Horse Poop whatever (it wasn't bingo, but they had some term for it). It was written on the street so that members of the parade could see it as they went by (and make their horses poop? lol)

The Calgary Children's Choir has the same dilemma, and we have often discussed this at board meetings. We have started putting info and reminders about concert etiquette in the program and in choir newsletters, esp. for the families of the youngest choir members, whose even younger siblings often come to concerts, so as to educate them from the ground up.

I still think that learning to sit in church goes a long way toward this process, though the expectations there are much more lax than they used to be, too.
