Clarinets

I saw this barrel when i was having JP fix a pad for me at RDG in LA. Its a new Backun and they had me try it out while i was waiting. It had pretty good intonation, and it felt alright, nothing miraculous though. It just looks so weird... I'm not sure what the point is really... maybe to look pretentious? It doesn't fit in the normal barrel ( Read more... )

Well, I would only buy it if you think it really helps your intonation and sound. Otherwise, it would be way too distracting, for me anyway. But I think I might need to look into a new barrel. Grego always tells me that I am pulled out way too far. And then when Carnahan singled the 3rds out to tune the fucking A in that bells piece and I couldn't get my A up high enough. Yeah, highly embarassing.

P.S. You really sounded awesome during master class. Good luck on the concerto competition. And congrats on the $1,000.00 from grandma.

yeah there's no way in hell i'm buying it. plus it already belongs to someone. I've noticed my intonation has been terrible since i got my clarinet back from JP, he fixed leaks and stuff that were affecting pitch i guess. oh well. its new barrel time.

I have one of his barrels. I used it for about 5 months. The pitch on mine was kind of funky. It made my throat g flat even without any venting. I know the barrels look nice without rings, but those rings serve a purpose. My cracked after a few months. I'd stick to Buffet barrels of some sort.

Good choice.

Now there's the hard question: His handmade barrels (with no rings) or his re-bored Buffets?

It's kind of like the oversized vehicle phenomenon. You can get a gigantic truck or a big fat clarinet barrel if you're insecure about the size of your... ::ahem::

Anyway, from a repair point of view, I would stay away from anything that doesn't have rings. Loose rings are considered an emergency repair because of the high chance that the socket will crack without that support. No good.
