I am surprised, however, that so many people in fandom were surprised by the reveal that Mary 's family was the one that hunted.

I was not surprised in the least. As soon as we learned that Mary had recognized the YED on the night she died, I knew that she at least had knowledge of the supernatural. And after Sam learned about how all her friends and relatives are dead, it just made sense that she was a hunter. I didn't guess that her family was in on it, though.

Still, it seems natural, I like it - the family business and all.
