I'm going to watch 2008's Pride and Prejudice because it's that time of the year, I'm sick, and it will round out my dreadful days. Of course, watching it will then make me want to read it, so that will probably be my first book.
Then I'm going to read Persuasion because I've been meaning to for years now.
That is a lot of trying to read Emma. I can't say I blame you for not wanting to put yourself through that again.
Persuasion is definitely worth a reread. It is a book that wears well in the wash, to paraphrase from the Anne books that I've been rereading like it's going out of style.
Has anyone else read Melusine by Sarah Monette? I was warned and all, but nothing prepared me for the abuse. I CANNOT. I heard that the series gets better, especially the third book which has lots of political intrigue - which I love - but I just cannot read the next books.
My next two projects: the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (anyone read these? I just read another blog rave and that's why I'm taking the plunge) and Game of Thrones, which I apparently might hate but which is worth a shot, according to my friend.
To whom I lend Connie Willis's books for the weekend! I can't wait to hear what she thinks about them. She also borrowed Jellicoe Road! Again, because it is fantastic! I should buy her a copy of her own. (Y'all, READ THIS. It is amazing.)
Ha, I don't know if you'll hate Game of Thrones, but I think it's one of those books where being warned really does have an affect on your opinion. I was warned that they were dark and ended up thinking, "Oh, it's not that dark."
And it's very readable and fast paced, so that helps a lot. I don't think it's a particularly lovable book, if that makes sense, but I'd say I overall enjoyed it. (Even if I can't quite commit myself to reading the third book yet.)
Haha, in all fairness, I'm only about 30 pages into the third one. I think it's just that this series--and this book in particular--is SO long. And (for me, at least) it's more about plot than the characters, which gives me less incentive to keep reading.

I loved Persuasion, though, which surprised me, especially after Emma.

That's good! (What is it about the third book? People keep bringing it up.)
