10.04.03LTS, surprisingly enough.
Not sure what the IO on device errors were about, nor the errors on kernel startup but we get to a shell & the desktop launches ok enough for me to get on with the things that I'm meant to be getting on with instead of chasing down all the usual niggles with computing that mean that anything one tries to do ends up taking tens of times longer than it should...

I like the Jumpy Shark name :)
