It seems counter-intuitive but I like scotch provided it's not smoky. I was at a bachelor party and a guy handed me a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold to take a swig from and I thought it was great. But at that price point I could more easily enjoy whiskey. I always feel like a bit of a dweeb when I say I want scotch that doesn't tasty smoky since that is the defining characteristic of so many brands.

1. Most distillers re-use barrels: bourbon, sherry, wines and some rum.
2. Not all used peated malt -smoke-
You're right about the prices, they're are outrageous and frankly, I believe some are high priced to give the luxury of illusion/top shelf.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban was $50 here - reasonable price -esp.for the money.
