First Advanced Editing project.

You may remember that I had been angstily trying to create a political video for my Advanced Editing class. We are doing a bunch of different versions/edits of them; this first one was cuts only and no audio. here's what I think, in brief:

1. cut faster

2. it's too sequential: you need to intercut more between the different sources to bring out nuances of your theme/argument

3. you need to think through the relationship between the TV relationships and the RL relationships. right now it seems like a causal connection: TV gayness leads to gay marriage -- is that what you're trying to say?

4. it seems as if there's a historical narrative here, especially given that you're framing it with Prelinger and ending with the California ruling. I think you need older TV footage to make that work. Ellen coming out on her sitcom is a watershed moment that could stand in for a lot of the media history.

5. also, why is Ellen/Portia first? shouldn't that be the conclusion/climax?

I like it very much! I think it's particularly effective that you go from the fictional shots into the real people -- it's surprisingly moving.
