...it's E3 week, and the big game console makers (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony) have made their pitches. If I were buying stock I'd buy Sony; right now it looks like if you want to buy a game console for this holiday season, Playstation 4 is the way to go.

I do think that we are definitely moving to what Microsoft proposed with their licensing structure, sooner rather than later, but Sony just wasn't ready to commit yet. (This honestly surprised me, especially given how they're also a movie/tv/music company.) All other digital media is currently the same as what Microsoft is doing, and it's how PC games have been for at least a decade. Everyone's already familiar with iOS, which also has the same restrictions.

The big difference is that PC and iOS also have insane and frequent sales, to make up for the lack of rentals and trades. If they'd announced yesterday that they'd be doing things similar to the Steam sales, I bet everyone would have been onboard.

I agree that we're going there, but a lot of folks (myself included) are going to have to be dragged there. Maybe I'm not kicking and screaming like some are, but I enjoy the fact that I can still buy and sell PS1 discs ( ... )

Oh yeah, I don't want to be an apologist, either; while the move doesn't really affect me too much since I don't generally buy used games, I did still occasionally trade with friends. And allegedly the "buy once, use on any machine" method will apply to the new Xbox One, similar to iOS or Steam.

And I've definitely got a love/hate relationship with Microsoft as well. One thing I'm dreading about building or buying a new PC soon is that I'm afraid I'll be forced to move kicking and screaming to Windows 8.
