I haven't had the time or energy to blog much-- busy at work, and some minor flu-like tiredness that had me hitting the sack really early. I even took a day off (but spent it finishing Xenosaga). I got my flu vaccine yesterday so I should be safe now, though ( Read more... )

Are you playing Settlers board game or some video game version? I enjoy that game too. Have you played Attika or other building/resource management-type board games?

The board game, but I'm going to get the demo of the 360 version. I'm not sure if it will be as much fun without friends and a lot of alcohol, we'll see.

Resource management games get overwhelming for me quickly. I've enjoyed other "German-style" boardgames like Tikkal and Bohnanza; but something like Axis & Allies gets tedious. I've played Civilization on the PC, but I get creamed on anything but an easy difficulty setting.

It's almost the antithesis of what I like about games like RPGs: becoming progressively stronger over time, without needing to struggle to keep what you've already "earned."

I've tried to play Civ on the PC a few times but always get stuck during the tutorial, haha! I'm serious, I don't know what I'm doing wrong but the tutorial will say, Do this, and I do--or at least I think I do--and nothing happens. I think what it comes down to is I really like my PC gaming to be very casual. I like more detailed board-gaming though.

I've played Bohnanza a dozen times; it's really fun with a big group but tedious and boring after the first five or so times.

Attika is very much like Catan; I hear Puerto Rico is too. Just in case you ever want variety :)

We have played Agricola once. It's very, very detailed but definitely a good, challenging thinking game if you ever want one with a group.

I personally can't imagine drinking while playing any of those other than Bohnanza.

Settlers of Cattan? Really... you're just NOW discovering it? I feel like just a horrible friend. I'm sorry.

It's more like, only now are my friends discovering that they might like to play games. I kind of went through the same thing with Magic: The Gathering; I bought a deck, never used it because nobody I spent a lot of time with played it.

On the other hand, thanks to Facebook Scrabble, I very quickly went from the guy who will beat everybody to the guy who will always lose. I lack the intensity and competitive drive to really excel at games.
