Weekend London [15-17 OCT]

Nov 12, 2021 20:08

So I was supposed to go on this theatre trip to London in July 2020, but then the world got to go into lockdown and the play was cancelled. I was thrilled when I got a mail from the Young Vic theatre earlier this year announcing that they would put on Hamlet with Cush Jumbo after all and that my ticket would be valid for the new dates. I was very ( Read more... )

Well, bummer! Looks like you made the absolute most out of a rather eventful trip (in all the wrong ways).

Oh, it was a lovely day indeed, and by now I'm experienced in making the most of it in London. If it had been my first visit, I would have been scared off to go again!

Oh man, I'm genuinely so sad that the theater play didn't happen. I felt your excitement through this post and went 'oh no' when you said they canceled. And I'm sorry that this whole trip turned out to be such a bum. Really, what the fuck, dumb server. Why even have tea on the card and then be an asshole about it? Make that make sense. Grrr.

I really, really, reeeeaaaally APPRECIATE THE PINK BALLS mwahahahaha!!!

Yeah, this was not an ideal trip! I'm glad I at least got to tick off some of the boxes on my fun-things-to-do-in-London list. *snuggles all the loot*

Dude in the bar was so dramatic about the tea, he didn't even give me a chance to change my order to lemonade because I couldn't get a word in between him complaining! I was surprised the tea was perfect after all that;)

I was on my way to the train when I saw that poodle and couldn't pass it by without taking a picture *giggles*

It is a pity that you did not get to the performance and there were many "terrible" little things, but I still like your trip )) The English subway is always awful ))

Oh, I too still loved my trip; I feel very fortunate that I was able to travel and it was a great day to walk around and admire the architecture in London. (I actually usually enjoy the subway, because to me it's part of being in a foreign city, but it just was too much in the middle of a pandemic)

How disappointing! But kudos for making the most of your trip anyway. And I totally agree, I cannot quite get into live streams of theatre productions either, despite more than appreciating their existence!

I did have a great day walking around (even if it was interrupted by testing;) - it was a privilege to be able to spend time in London again.

It's great that theatres started sharing more plays online during the lock downs; I saw a marvelous performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream from the Shakespeare's Globe last year (a theatre I still need to visit one day). But there is nothing like seeing a play live on stage!

Exactly, it is one of the rare good things to come out of this pandemic that plays have become more accessible but I am so looking forward to going back to the theatre in person! (My first play in a very long time will hopefully be this month's La Ménagerie de verre with Isabelle Huppert in Amsterdam but I'm bracing myself for another cancellation.)

OOh, that sounds amazing! Crossing my fingers that you get to go despite the new lockdown regime.

Aw, it is too bad they cancelled!
I'm confused about the COVID tests - were they for the theatre? I mean, you were walking around all over but had to do tests....

The architecture was lovely, the signs very tidy, the man hole cover very *manly*. I cannot imagine how tea for one is *harder* than tea for more, wth.

Thanks, as always, for sharing your adventures!

I didn't need a COVID test for the theatre; the "2 day UK test" is mandated by the UK government for everyone visiting from abroad, even if that's just for one day. I had to book and pay for this intensive test before entering the country. The second, fast test was to get back into the Netherlands because the UK is on the list of high risk countries. They said I wouldn't be allowed on the train without a negative test result, but this wasn't checked. I did have to show proof of vaccination at customs though.

That server didn't even give me a chance to change my order to something else, because I couldn't get a word in between him being all dramatic! I was surprised the tea was perfect after all that;)

Ah ha, okay. Seems odd if you didn't get results/didn't get asked/just wandered around, but...at least they're trying. :D

I'm still boggling that tea for one is HARD, while tea for two or more is not. And what, they just straight-up told you it was hard? WTH. :D

Tea for one was on the menu, so that couldn't have been the problem. He said there was a problem boiling water. I think he just prefered people who ordered an (more expensive) alcoholic drink in his bar and couldn't be bothered to put the kettle on;) I would have considered ordering a lemonade if he had just asked.
