Just a quick missing scene/oneshot thing I wrote awhile ago and decided to post on a slow Sunday afternoon. Not my favourite work by a long shot, but I kinda like the idea.
Thanks. I'm always careful with the whole 'poor self-sacrificing' Ryan thing because I think it's easy to overplay it and wind up writing a kind of modern dickensian parody, or over-romanticize Ryan's issues (which I find patronizing), but this is less about Ryan than it is about how Sandy perceives Ryan; accurately, but not completely.
Hee. I've always assumed Sandy knew exactly what he was doing, going to Ryan like that. I think you've set forth his inner reasoning and resultant guilt perfectly -- he had to feel bad about what he was doing, even if he held at least some hope that it might also return Ryan to them.
(However, but for Teresa's 'loss' of the baby, I'm not sure that Seth's & the Cohen's needs would have trumped Teresa's more immediate needs in Ryan's duty-driven mind -- poor boy would have been seriously conflicted.)
You've written Kirsten more generously than did the writers on the show. I, too, have often written her as more caring than TPTB. (As if that's hard to do! Ha!)
On the show, she actually told Sandy to bring Seth home -- no mention of bringing Ryan back to Casa Cohen.
I wish I could believe the Cohens would ever love Ryan equally with Seth... it's a nice thought.
Thanks for your comments. When I was posting this, months after having it pre-read, I was trying to remember something my pre-reader had commented on that I meant to address before I put it up: Theresa's reaction. I think I meant to put in a line or two where Sandy anticipates Theresa's behaviour (at least that she'd try to push Ryan away for his own good).
This is a little off-topic, but . . .
Regarding the Cohens+1, I always felt that their failures with Ryan had less to do with not loving him than they did with having no clue how to express that love to someone like Ryan. Kirsten in particular, I always felt, was labouring under a mix of guilt over her initial behaviour, insecurity and lack of entitlement (i.e: what right do I have to usurp his real mother. There were times when she clearly identified Ryan as her son - the one that always stands out for me is how, when Trey appears back on the scene, she's equally worried about the impact he'll have on both of the boys

Love Sandy's point of view and the guilt of using Ryan that way. Poor little Ryan!.
Thanks.
