That was wonderful, the complexity of Esca's emotions, the mood, pragmatism vs. superstitions and human instincts of curiosity and fear, and the instinct to help another living being - I can't wait for more :)
What an exciting opening chapter! I can't wait to read the next one; I really like Esca's thoughts and confusion about the captive Roman, and am looking forward to what happens when Marcus wakes up!
You are back! And with Marcus and Esca! Be still my heart.
I was going to say that this is as great as usual, but it's not, it's way BETTER. Your style is more rounded, fuller (for lack of a better word from my part), so much so that I was able to picture the all wild, barren lanscape in my head perfectly, with every salted spray and every wispy strand of heather on the moor.
Oooh! I'm coming to this very late, I know, but really enjoyed this. Love the interaction between the boys and Esca acting as their acknowledged leader, and the clever way you've used accents.
And, brilliant description of roundhouse life, the matter of fact acceptance of Esca's parents - seems very real somehow. On to chapter 2!
