As for your interest, I would suggest trying to get him to watch Whispers of the Heart. Out of all of those it's the most realistic in setting, and art style, but still has a reason to be animated.

I'm pretty well known as the hugging person. I don't think my ex ever really hugged people until he started to date me. It's a nice comfortable form of intimacy, that isn't to overly gross as a pda, and it's just nice to feel that close to someone.
