"They're gonna tell stories about us someday," he tells her one night, lying on his back with her shoulder touching his shoulder in the dinky little room. Water stains made hypnotic circles on the ceiling, and it was late enough that no one went clattering by on the streets outside. Just regular patrols running over walls and rooftops, and the two of them in the dark ( ... )

Dark hands close on his wrists and twist. Kakuzu is strong enough to break bones from a cold stop; it takes a long time, speaking shinobi-style, Hidan knows that. He's seen it. There's lots of time for begging and screaming, not that it does any shit.

They look each other in the eye. Hidan leers, lets his tongue loll. Jashin's marks burn on his body; he looks like a sack of bones, Kakuzu is a sack of whatever weird shit he's made up of. Together they might make one person.

"Well?"

"Is this really," Kakuzu says to him in this rumbling burn of a voice, "all you think about?"

"It's not all I think about." They're so close, Hidan only has to jostle forward a little, and Kakuzu lets him, and he lets Hidan roll his hips against him too, or at least he doesn't stop him. Even if his eyes do sort of darken, or flatten out or something.

"You fucking old fogey," Hidan purrs back. "You fucking monster. Fucking monster -"

Kakuzu twists his wrists hard. Hidan feels the strain of bone. "Quiet. I've had enough of this."

"Make me ( ... )

"It all feels a little far away, doesn't it?" Joshua asks him airily, in one of those slack times in week two, where Neku has ample opportunities to bite his nails and fret about the missions but no actual chance to do anything but run around doing errands and wishing he could scalp his latest partner.

Neku barely listens to him, only picks up on the question because his brain recognizes the lilting upward tone as inquisitive before his brain also recognizes that it's Joshua, and that he doesn't want to know. "What?" he says, before he remembers that it's better just to let these things go.

Those ultraviolet eyes burn him before Joshua looks away again and waves a hand. "Look at this. We're in the middle of Shibuya, but it's like we're not even here at all." His smile is precise, suggestive. "We could do anything we wanted, Neku. Have you thought about that?"

"It's not like we affect anything out here except Noise." He has an inkling where this might be going, so he mutters, just for manners, really.

"And each other, Neku ( ... )

"We could bet on it?" she asks him at one point, eyes wide and sweet and transparently calculating and her mouth pursed.

Zexion pauses and looks at her, and lets himself smile a little. Only a little, one corner of his mouth curving up the slightest bit. He's played cards with Luxord, for a lark and for a test, and he's won, too. Really, she doesn't have a chance.

"It's not gambling if you know who'll win," he tells her, and turns his back and lets himself really smile at her scowl.

Those knives have got to hit and stick, he told her more times than she can count. If you're relying on them they gotta stick, they gotta make some kind of mark.

Doing as much damage as possible is what'll let her survive whatever she runs into. She knows it.

Just, it's never easy. Little knives, the little wasps, they fit well between her fingers but they ping off their targets or slide without cutting or just don't hit the mark at all half the time. It seemed like such a good idea -

Rin has to stop and pinch the bridge of her nose sometimes. Take deep breaths, until the frustration goes down a little.

Then she goes and picks up her knives, and starts the whole practice again.
