Hmm, interesting implication that there was a female Firelord a while back and that there can be female daimyos, but mostly, women are just there to be married off for alliance purposes.

To be fair, mostly nobles of either gender are just there to be married off for alliance purposes. It's just that neither Ursa nor Lady Ran are in a position to be inheriting anything, so it didn't come up in this story.

If Torao had not become his father's heir, he was just as likely to go live with Lady Ran as she was to come live with him. However, as daimyo, he has to maintain himself in his han, so his wife has to live there.

Ursa would go live with Ozai, even though he's not intended to inherit anything, because he is a prince, and she is a merchant. They're sure as hell not sending Ozai to her.

Hmm, I did get the impression that the males tend to inherit better stuff than the women and are generally in more roles of power, though that may not be what you intended.

One of my odd little themes in Avatar is how marriage isn't always about love. I like marriages that result in love (Ozai/Ursa, Iroh/Zolena, Torao/Lady Ran, Long Feng/Song), but the reasons they get married in the first place are never because of love. Marriage is treated as an alliance - what do each of you bring to the table that make you the best choice.
