Avatar: Toph and Lao Bei Fong (1/2)

Lao Bei Fong rolls heliodor between his fingers, and he thinks of emeralds. The yellow stone darkens with blue, but the final effect is far from the deep green prized by Earthfolk. It's more of an aquamarine, which will at least fetch more money than the heliodor would.

He lets the aquamarine drop to the tabletop-

And he stares at his hand. It's shaking like an old man's and as pale as a Fire National's.

He's overdone it. Gembending is a complicated, draining extension of an already difficult type of earthbending. He has a knack for crystalbending; he's at least capable of gembending. But he has to fight the gems to make changes like this-

Crystalbending is not an earthbending form for fighters. An earthbender who wants to shape crystals must work with them, or the crystals will fight him and eventually kill him from exhaustion.

He must stop fighting his crystals. He mustHe never did this sort of thing before the Avatar stole his daughter

Avatar: Toph and Lao Bei Fong (2/2)

Ba Sing Se is a city of earthbenders, and there are earthbending arenas for anyone who wants to use them. Toph declares one of them hers by fiat and earthbends everyone else out, then seals up the entrances.

"I'm not helpless," she snaps at him as she settles into a ready position.

It's been years since Lao dueled. He's always hated it - dueling is about strength.

He stands and waits for her attack.

Toph throws a boulder twice the size he is at him. Lao does not move. His eyes narrow as he focuses on the boulder. The size is bigger than he can move, but-

Not quite bigger than he can disintegrate.

He doesn't see the flash of fear on Toph's face as he doesn't move out of the way. It is very jarring, however, when the boulder stops a yard away from him, and he has to readjust for its lack of movement and keep an eye on his surroundings for the next attack

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Writing Lao was an interesting experience, since I wanted him to come across as sympathetic in his wanting to hide Toph from the world.

Gembending is actually dark_puck's idea. We just borrow freely from each other.

Aah. Well, it's still a nifty idea, and I like the way you portrayed it. XD
