Title: Vigil
Day/Theme: Aug. 14 "All night long I've held your hand"
Series: G1 Transformers (the 80s cartoon/Marvel comic series)
Character/Pairing: Heretic, Caryatid (OFC pair; G1 Transformers is a big universe)
Rating: PG

Background: This takes place on Cybertron, pre-Ark launch. Just spending some time with two of my original characters, especially since they've got moderately major parts in the OC-cast fic I've been working on.

In reference to the subject line, thanks to matrixrefugee, I found a drabble-a-day themed community called 31_days. Naturally, I got interested, because I love doing short, short pieces that express one simple scene.

In the long watch of the night, the virtual circuit formed by their joined energy fields never went out.

Heretic crouched on the recharge berth, her knees drawn up to cover her cracked chestplate. One arm wrapped around her legs, the elbow and shoulder joints sparking slightly, and the other hung limply down her side. The hand on the end of that arm was missing two fingers, but that didn't weaken her grip on Caryatid's hand. Her broken visor rested on her foot.

A Transformer head, with the Autobot symbol conspicuously covering one of its cheeks, sat at the end of the berth.

Heretic couldn't take her optics off it.

Caryatid sat on the floor, filling out a supply request form with the hand that wasn't holding her partner's. Her nearly severed wing scraped against the floor with every shift of her arm. Once every few cycles, she tilted her face towards the smaller Transformer. Whatever the Seeker sought, she didn't find.

The brazen sound of reveille filled their comm channels. Heretic shuddered and slackened her grip on Caryatid's hand, turning towards the wall. Immediately, the Seeker tightened hers, squeezing hard enough to break one of Heretic's overtaxed joints.

Heretic's optics flashed a blink, and she stared at Caryatid as if she had never seen her partner before. The Seeker looked up at her imploringly and raised her other hand in order to rub her partner's maimed hand between hers. The additional low-key energy fields brought into contact with her own seemed to soothe Heretic; her shoulders lost their hunch and her legs stretched out more naturally.

Reveille sounded again, dark undertones whispering against the edge of the mind. Caryatid stood slowly, her expression inscrutable. Her hands remained clasped around that of her partner.

Heretic stared at her, then slowly reached up with her free hand and tore off the remaining Autobot symbol half-hidden by one of her tires. She dropped it on the head at the foot of her berth.

Caryatid smiled and bent down to press her shattered mouth against the Decepticon symbol proudly displayed on Heretic's chest.
