You're completely right. Parent's DONT tell their kids that. I'm sorry I don't want to spend 25 years in an office job sitting at a desk, plugging data into computers all day, EITHER. But... you know what? That's the kind of job I'm applying for, to give me the kind of means to study English at college in the Fall. I'm going to cleverly adapt a line from "The Princess Bride." We are majors of English. Practical careers do not become us. =D If you can bear your mom, please do. But don't let her dissuade you. English is good.
