I've preferred the secondary characters or even the "sidekick" characters for ages. It didn't really hit me until I was watching "Highlander" and realized the Duncan was a bit full of himself and kinda boring, but hey, look at that sidekick Richie and that ever so interesting Methos.
I think it boils down to the heroes having to be all noble and ya know, heroic and stuff. They're often predictable and that way like boring. But sidekicks and secondary characters aren't held to the same rules. Of course they're prone to doing something outside the norm just to get chastised by The Hero(ine), but whatever.
I love that icon;) It's #10 isn't it (just checking!)
And, yes, you are damn right about the secondary characters being 'more interesting'. Apart from the Doctor - he's interesting all by himself. Or at least in need of a hug;)
Never really grokked Highlander; the ex loved it, I just thought that Methos was a babe! I just wish that they would stop 'removing' the characters I like most - it's most annoying!
What drew me to Highlander was what drew me to Stargate really -- mythology. I loved the concept of the story, right from the movie.
Highlander was the first show where I became actively annoyed by the lead though. I could never put my finger on why, even though I still liked the show and actor at the time.
I also think it was a show that could have benefited by a break from the formula. There was always a flashback sequence (I think there was maybe one episode that didn't), and sometimes they were really stretching to make the connection from past events to present ones.
