Theoretically... blame Chris Nolan and Pixar for this.
After the 'fiasco' of '08 where both The Dark Knight and Wall.e were *shamefully* (especially Wall.e - my favourite film of that year) shut out of the Best Picture (BP) race, the Academy decided to go back to the old days and extend the BP race to 10 films rather than 5. This resulted in the excellent District 9 being nominated last year.
Though to be honest? If the film's director(s) haven't been nommed - then the film has two hopes. Slim and Bob.
