Miss_ZedemIt was an accident, but then everything that involved the Doctor was. Especially finding him.
Jack probably should have walked away -- protected the time line, all that -- but he'd already done the right thing once, sacrificed and walked away. Doing it a second time, so soon, wasn't going to happen.
So, in the murky light of a dreary gray day that was turning to night as the first drops of rain fell, he took him to a cafe instead. Somewhere quiet and warm, where the rain could fall, the wind could howl, and they could sit and watch and be untouched.
The cafe was almost empty at this hour. Jack chose a table near a window, one that looked out over the street. They sat down just as the drizzle turned to rain that lashed against the glass and blurred the scene just outside. The Doctor ordered tea. Jack had coffee. They sat together and remembered together in companionable silence and comfort.
"Don't I feel wrong to you?" Jack finally asked, too curious not to.
A crease appeared between the Doctor's pale eyebrows. "What?" He had no idea, Jack realized, what he was talking about.
"I'm a fixed point in time," Jack tried to explain, using the words the Doctor's older, later, self had used. "A … fact." It wasn't easy giving a second-hand explanation; he sounded stilted.
The Doctor's expression cleared with realization and a faint smile replaced an even fainter frown. He put the cup down, fingers still curled around the curve of the ceramic.
"Jack," he said. His voice was soft, melodic and utterly undeniable. "You feel like home."
