Jack's first night on board, the Doctor comes into the control room and finds Jack flat on his back under the console.

"What the hell are you doing to my ship?" he asks.

Jack looks away from whatever it is he's doing for a second and gives the Doctor a brilliant grin. "Trust me," he says, "I know what I'm doing."

The Doctor wants to tell Jack that he doesn't trust him and there's no way Jack knows what he's doing but what he actually says is "be careful."

"Always," Jack promises.

The Doctor knows it's a lie, so he snorts but he doesn't try to stop Jack. He takes a seat where he can keep a close eye on the “captain”.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Jack asks. His eyes are back on the Doctor even though the angle is awkward and he has to look along the length of his body and around his knee to see him.

"What's what supposed to mean? I didn't say anything!" the Doctor protests unconvincingly.

"You snorted."

"Could've been anything. Could've had dust up my nose."

"It isn't dusty and most people don't inhale when they've got something up their nose."

"I'm not most people and it means I don't think you'd know careful if it walked up and bit you on the arse."

"I know careful." Jack stops working, one arm still inside the console.

"Like you were careful back there?" The Doctor gestures into the interior of the TARDIS but they both know what he really means.

"I was careful," Jack tells him.

"But you weren't careful enough, were you?" He loses all pretense of joviality and both of them are suddenly serious.

"I cleaned up after myself." Jack tries to assure him but he doesn't sound convinced himself.

"You stopped a bomb that was meant to fall from falling on people who shouldn't have been there to start with."

"I could have been killed!"

"That's careful?"

There's no answer to that. The Doctor's made his point and Jack knows it.

Neither one speaks for a bit. The hum of the TARDIS is the only thing that saves them from absolute silence. Jack goes back to doing whatever he's doing to the console and the Doctor goes back to watching him.

It's Jack that speaks first this time. "Where's Rose?"

"Sleeping. Or wandering around sticking her nose somewhere it doesn't-"

He breaks off as Jack pushes against the floor with his foot, arches his hips and with a soft grunt pushes his arm a bit deeper inside the TARDIS.

The TARDIS shudders under and around him.

"What the hell are you doing?" the Doctor asks again.

Jack shimmies out from under the edge of the console. When he pulls his arm back it glistens with something thick, clear and wet. "You don't want to know," he tells the Doctor with a devil-may-care grin.

The Doctor decides just this once, Jack can be right. He really, definitely, doesn't want to know.
