joyuexnoel and I have this thing with Judd Winick's writing in various comic books, either we go over the moon for it (like with his current run on Batman or my love for him on Exiles) or we hate it with a burning passion (as I'm told about his time with GA), very rarely in between, and the other night I said what might be the most clever thing I've ever ( Read more... )

Batgirl - Spoilers (irony not intended) joyeuxnoel August 20 2009, 15:21:42 UTC
Honestly, I think Cass's "I only fought for him" bit was pretty accurate. Now, and I don't ever agree with it, but every time they've needed someone to play Devil's Advocate about Cass, it's *always* been Dick ( ... )

In theory, I don't mind anything they've done and they've got all the pieces they need here, it's just... something about the way it's not quite coming together bothers me. I could buy Cass' motivations a lot more if there were any sort of build-up, you know? But there's no warning, as far as I can tell.

Granted, I haven't read that much of Cass since RIP, but everything I did read had her accepting Bruce's death and her continuing to want to fight. Like in... Outsiders, I think it was? Where she set up their Network to replace Bruce and agreed that Dick was the one who should be running it. I didn't get any sense of her thinking about quitting.

It does make sense--much as I wish otherwise, because the idea of a Dick+Cass teamup is still one of my dreams--that Cassandra worshiped Bruce, she built so much of her new self around him, that working for someone else just wouldn't do it for her. But again... zero build-up to that. (And I do agree that Dick's the only one who could be critical of her, he's really the only one who ( ... )

Winick joyeuxnoel August 20 2009, 15:23:03 UTC
I think my deal with Winick is the same as Geoff Johns. One moment I can love him for a random bit of dialogue or a detail here or there and then I'll turn the page and start headdesking at random shit.

With Winick it's mostly whoever he decided to shoot today or his soapboxes but... yes. A total love/hate deal. Or masochism. I haven't decided yet.

I have fewer moments of total ICK with both Johns and Winick than you do, but I have that exact feeling you do with Morrison. And maybe Millar and, to some degree, Bendis. They can write such great dialogue and sharp stories... and then they'll write some random piece of bullshit and I just want to throw everything across the room.

....now I kind of want a list of love/hate authors like that.

Comic Book Authors joyeuxnoel August 20 2009, 16:30:53 UTC
I don't fangirl Morrison but I don't hate him either. I think it's more that I don't care enough about him for his work to really stand out for me. That and he never writes titles I want to read. Agreed with Millar though.

If we're talking Comic Books, wouldn't that be everyone but Jeph Loeb and Mark Waid who we will always love without reservation?

I dunno, there are a lot of authors that I either just "really like" or else I don't love enough to "LOVE" or care enough to "HATE", as part of a genuine love/hate relationship.

Like, I don't always-always LOVE JMS, but I've never really hated his work. Ditto Kelly and Lobdell.

I guess maybe Devin Grayson would fit into this? PAD is sort of starting to get there with his latest X-Factor being so boring....

Streets of Gotham [spoilers] joyeuxnoel August 20 2009, 15:30:31 UTC
I just. I loved the details about the book. I am still "... wtf?" about Elliot wanting to impersonate Bruce because that's such a weird idea that only works in comic books but yeah, I can kind of buy why Dick can't just step up. Dick's never been involved in Wayne Enterprises insomuch and he sure as hell hasn't been in the public spotlight so I can see how the batclan doesn't want to air the entire affair out in the public. Because once they prove the impersonation then they have to explain where the real Bruce Wayne is ( ... )

Yeah, I still think it's kind of "...." to let a loose cannon like Elliot run around, even if you've got a watchdog team on him, because of COURSE he's going to try to wiggle out of it and it's not like they can't get Miss Martian to help them out and then have Bruce go on vacation again, but I get that Dick says that Gotham needs someone to give them hope again and it'd be a lot more complicated to get someone else into the role, ongoing.

And, to be honest, as much as I think it is Dick's role to take care of the company now, he's also not Bruce and the extra burden on him--to be both Batman and keep up the facade of the care-free ward of the Wayne company--wasn't something he really wanted to take on. And, yeah, he's not Bruce, he's going to do it his way ( ... )

And Sho knows they know it better than anyone else. That's the best part. :|b

Or at the very least they've worked out a schedule. Nino gets Sho's ass the most often because Nino is whiny and clingy and nobody wants to deal with him but Sho. But Ohmiya and Aibajun then trade-off days otherwise. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Aibajun got his ass back with temporary tattoos or permanent markers having doodled "NINO WAS HERE" all over it. :|b

You know. My favourite part of the 4 poses game? When Aiba's conspiring with SPEED to pick a pose for Arashi and they come up with the purikura poses, the Shukudai staff saved Aiba's LIFE there. Because Jun was arguing about how there's no real pose for that and starts to zoom over so he can TALK to Aiba. CLOSELY. Because that gets results.

And he runs into the pole for the curtains because the staff have quickly raised it up to chest level. And so Jun's stuck just yelling at Aiba. :D

I LOVED THAT. You know they were putting their own lives in danger, but they had to save Aiba, because Jun was totally going to go over there and have a very strong talk with him, but then he can't without making an even bigger scene and thus Aiba and the show are saved! \o/

I hope they slept with one eye open that night, though.

as;dfjkaslkj god I'll never get tired of Princess Matsumoto's temper. NEVER EVER. ♥

YES. Especially what with all of Arashi being too chicken to move Jun from his relaxing spot in the van. (Though you know Nino sat up there with him at first because he LOVES Jun and hates Sho's sanity. And then Sho finally cracked and treated Ohno to some really good food and then Ohno very calmly asks Nino to come sit with him in the back. And Sho can't sit in front of Nino because Nino KNOWS - even though he's not going to pass up a chance to grab Ohno's ass when he's ASKING FOR IT. And Sho still suffers because Aiba isn't allowed to sit beside Jun so he sits one back and BREAKS NINO'S KNEE ALL THE TIME and so Nino does things like get Sho's attention and then cup Ohno's cock while Sho's looking. And Sho debates trying to sit up front with Jun, but that means leaving OHNO, NINO AND AIBA ALONE WHERE THEY CAN JOIN FORCES.)
