Boy I haven't made a significant post in a while...

Aug 24, 2011 22:55

I am doing so badly about posting these days. My job is seriously tiring me out lately and so I just don't feel like communicating much when I get home. Heck, I crawled into bed earlier tonight and took a nap. I was never much for naps until I hit my 30s. ( Cut for rambling rambledlyness about earthquakes, hurricanes, Royal Pains (spoilers for tonight's episode) and Doctor Who, among other things )

I suspect we wouldn't have felt that much movement someplace like California where they have things like earthquake building codes, you know?

Our buildings shake just as much, if not more. Just the buildings don't fall down. :)

How far away from the epicenter were you? I understand the distance vs. strength ratio is all different east coast and mid-plate. Here something like that wouldn't be felt more than about 50 miles away. But if you're right by it, it'd be pretty strong.

I think it depends on the type of rock and the depth of the quake's focus. Our last big one up here in the Seattle area was in February 2001. It was a magnitude 6.8, which should've done some reasonably serious damage but didn't because it was 52km deep. But they felt it almost 200 miles away, in eastern Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Yeah, there's that too. An extremely shallow quake means a lot less between shaking and ground to buffer it.

With Northridge, we were about a mile from the epicenter. We were absolutely shocked at the initial 6.6 magnitude (I forget where it settled, 6.9?). Because we'd really only felt earthquakes much much further away before then. We assumed it was The Big One, and had to be around an 8 or something.

The earth is weird.

Just the buildings don't fall down.

Well, that is the important part. :-)

We're about 120 miles away. I wouldn't say it was strong, exactly, but it was very obvious. At least to those of us standing up. Two of our department down one floor in a conference room had no idea what happened until someone came by to tell them to get out of the building (we evacuated briefly).

Man I did not feel this earthquake at all. GOOD LUCK WITH IRENE DD: SHE SOUNDS SCARY.

I am deeply envious of those of you who either have already or are getting ready to go to England to see DT and CT in Much Ado. I really, really wish I could go, but I can afford neither the time nor the money at this point. I am sincerely hoping that someone will be smart enough to make a DVD out of it, because I would love to see it.

Aww. I remember reading everyone's DT Hamlet posts last summer and fall and getting all envious and jealous. I WILL TRY AND DOWNPLAY ITS AWESOME IN MY LJ POST ON THE TOPIC??

I AM LEAVING TOWN TOMORROW. I do not want to meet Irene up close and personal, so am taking a weekend in the western mountains.

Nononono. Play it up so I can feel like I was there vicariously. :-)

I watch Royal Pains and some weeks, like this week, I wonder why. I was dumbstruck with what the writers did with Evan. When he blows up at Hank and smashes his car window I actually said out loud, "What an asshole." Then, at the end, when Hank is trying to make peace, but doesn't apologize, WHICH HE SHOULDN'T, and Evan closes the door in his face, my follow-up was, "You little shit."

Not only is Hank bound by patient confidentiality, doesn't he owe it to his future sister-in-law to allow her the opportunity to share what's been going on with Evan? Evan has no cause to be that angry and I feel like we were suppose to sympathize with him and, instead, I was hoping he'd go away forever. He may have helped Hank rebound after his dismissal in NYC, but Hank has done a hell of a lot (and put up with a hell of a lot in the process) to make Evan a success.

I wanted to whack Evan upside the head a BUNCH in this episode. As you say, Hank had two perfectly good reasons not to talk about it. Evan should get a grip. Sheez.
