I've been gone, I'm back, I have thoughts on Tumblr and Wonder Woman and that damn Space Raccoon.

Right, I've been gone forever. I spent the first half of April in the USA for my grandpa's funeral (well, memorial service, he was cremated right after he died, but people wanted to take time to organise a big memorial service when scattered family could all attend). It was good to see some people I haven't seen in a really long time. It was ( Read more... )

Nooooooooo... Puppiessss.... Nah, but Steve's okay. At least the movie version. You know, not that version that was all, "I don't torture people, so I'M gonna leave the room!" (Which to be fair I think was just Warren Ellis's Captain America, but still. Whyyyyyy.)

In fairness I haven't seen the second movie. The first one bored me silly though, leaving me little desire to see the second.

They're starting to be too much just about the action sequences.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather.

Tumblr really frustrates me, too. It just feels very shouty to me, and the interface is too messy to have real conversations. It totally is an echo chamber, and I feel like there's a lot of pressure to have the "right" opinions about things that Tumblr has, en masse, decided are problematic or not problematic. It's like this weird culture of getting points for finding things to complain about. Not that I think problematic things should be ignored, it's just I hate the way Tumblr does it.

Thanks. I wrote a bit about her here. I'm pretty broken up about it but he had a good life, and a long one.

I also agree with what you're saying about tumblr. And it's hard to talk about because it often is discussing things that need to be discussed and "let's just calm down," so often is the tactic of people who think it's not a problem and want to stop the discussion that it's...well it puts us in a position that feels very awkward. I think it's that lack of nuance. The whole RIGHT/WRONG screaming thing. You can't say, "well yeah, it's wrong, but I think you're ignoring x, y and z in ways that are detrimental to the very thing you're complaining about..." without it seeming like you're then defending it ( ... )

My feeling of Tumblr is that it's an arena perfectly built for people to stand up and shout 'Me!' to the world. 'This is what I like! Isn't this brilliant!' But not an arena for any sort of debate or conversation.

Sometimes when I see people trying to have conversations and exchange ideas there, I just can't follow it, it's not clear who is responding to what, so I don't read it, I just scroll by to look at the pretties.

Yup, that's basically it exactly...

wow, I completely misunderstood the point of that Tumblr post. I thought it meant that both Marvel and DC are idiots for not making movies with female leads and doing ridiculous things like that instead...now I feel stupid for reblogging it...

(I wish Captain Marvel would join the movieverse because so far my experience with her is limited to one episode of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and that's annoying. (Whenever I think about reading comics I get scared because I have no idea where to start and also don't have a single place to store them.)

That said, I spent most of my time on LJ and forums being too scared to post my thoughts in case people disagreed with me, so Tumblr is much less scary because even if I don't like or reblog something I don't feel like everyone's going to get angry at me.

...And I just realized you never friended me back so tell me if you want me to delete this comment. *headdesk*

Ah, dude, all I can say is that it's not what it meant to me. You reblogged it because of what it meant to you? But also I guess that's part of what I meant when I said it was hard to have those conversations. Because everything you see is from someone you know, and quite probably like, and so when you disagree, it's hard to discuss it. Or sometimes, like this, maybe even hard to know what people were thinking in the first place, because it's just a contextless reblog ( ... )
