Ok, so this is the one week I basically ignored in exploring the relaunch. Maybe if I hear they're good later? Even so, I've LOVED having your reviews of everything and even picked up a couple of new ones I would have skipped without the rec. :)
Yeah, this week was the week I finally felt pretty tired by the whole thing, probably also due to the fact that there was no single book I was super excited by, but you know, they'll all still be there later if you change your mind, right?
And thanks - I'm really glad you enjoyed reading them! I hope the ones you picked up didn't disappoint! And if they did they at least amused! (I spent a fabulous half hour drawing mustachios on everyone in the Green Arrow book, myself...)
(WONDER WOMAN. IDEK. I'M SO THRILLED IT DIDN'T DISAPPOINT I LACK WORDS. SO PRETTY. SO MUCH HEADBUTTING. TOTALLY SOLD. WHY ISN'T #2 OUT YET. ♥)
lolAquaman. Haven't brought myself to read him yet, mostly because of my bias that usually involves lols. Because really. He talks to fish. He could be more awesome because hey, invulnerable and stuff! But Get him on land without a fish bowl and... fail. Namor kicks his ass. Hell, Aqua Lad scored better on Atlantean powers than the King himself did. This is a reboot, so they really could have given him a chance and FINALLY done better by his powers AND by that godawful costume. One of the things that bugged me at the end of JL was the big discourse on the redesign of costumes where Aquaman and others actually got some cool looks, but they were just too "complicated" so sucks to be you, Aquaman. Back to the fish scales

but Aquaman you have to beat up because he's been ensorcled by Circe and keeps summoning giant lobsters to eat you.
Seriously? Omgs, that is priceless.
I did see that at the back of Justice League though! And the stupid thing is that so MANY of the redesigns are pretty complicated. Like look at Batgirl's new design, for crying out loud, it's got seams and spikes and fiddly bits galore! Bah. I liked that Aquaman design better too.
On the other hand, I think that the current Aquaman at least doesn't like, die if he doesn't get wet or something. I dunno, it was actually cooler than I thought it would be, but I did at least have the fact that I didn't have Namor in my head as the Cooler King of the Ocean the whole time. :p
Okay finally read this and. Wow. In the first page or two, I thought they were going with the notion of him showing people how awesome he was; screw your jokes! But they joked anyway and twice we had Aquaman flouncing off like he was Superman. All he was missing were the tears. The entire comic was all about him being a laughing stock. It was actually rather painful to read.
I guess, with the threat from the ocean, he's going to save everyone, but what's the point? Man, as far as fanservice goes, this honestly offends me waaaaaay more than Cat/Bat sex possibly could. This was just mean.
Definitely gratitous, but, we live in am HBO world now so we're going to have to deal with 2-3 issues/episodes of not-necessarily-contextual boobies before we get to the meat of the matter
( ... )
Yeah and in fairness to the comic, I don't think it's going to be all about strippers in the future either since she quit. Still I was kind of surprised that there seemed to be less of the HBO-style attempt to justify contextless boobies with "grit" and "edginess" than I was expecting and instead it was just...boobies.
But yeah, I'm now totally confused about the ending because people seem to think different things. I think that they may have changed her powers? Unless she always had the ability to have both her alien and human forms? SO CONFUSED which isn't a brilliantly clear sign, though I guess next week should clear it up.
It's interesting you say she was aloof - I couldn't tell if it was that or if she was simply uncertain and detached - we spend so little time in her head? And I think in another context I'd find that more intriguing but the contextless boobies sort of make me a little less charitable about that

I'm not sure how far they are separating her from WildCATS, but I do recommend you check out the Travis Charest/Alan Moore run on the title, which featured the story I mentioned of the CATS heading off to meet their people. And being thoroughly rejected. There was a most glorious scene where she's made to fight the Coda women and she's injured and her daemonite form manifests and she demands to know who wants to dance with her now

I wasn't planning on getting this one, but did because it looked purty and I found that I was not at all disappointed. In fact, both this and JL International have tweaked my interest because I really know nothing about any of the characters at all and, since none of them are that big, none of the old fans seem to have any major complaint about any potential personality changes that they may have gone through, if any.
Re: JL DarkbeccatoriaOctober 12 2011, 21:35:59 UTC
Yeah, I was really glad I picked this one up. I think another thing that JLI and JLD have going for them is that because the characters aren't so well known there's more of an effort to characterise them in their brief appearances. Sure in the case of JLI that is the way of stereotypes, but screw it, it's lighthearted and amusing and in one book people tell Batman to sod off and in the other they bind him with magical electrical cables. I CALL THAT A WIN.
Seriously, I think there is a rule that Batman must be in EVERY. SINGLE. COMIC. Soon he's going to join the X-Men... :p
LOL Batman is such a whore. I kinda hated that he had to be there to give Booster Gold props so that poor Booster could earn some respect, but it was logical. I'm hoping the JLI folk don't stick to stereotypes for too long. It's slightly annoying, but there's still enough to interest me.
Okay, Godiva is annoying. The others, I'm being patient with.
Zatanna disabling Batman was delicious, but then, I've gotten a few peaks at what she's capable of. Plus I am terribly biased by this:
