So. On account of being bored, avoidant of real world things I needed to deal with, and currently without a vidding project, I randomly decided to switch operating systems on account of how the latest Ubuntu system got released and, hell, it was free ( Read more... )

Awesome! I should consider doing this. Funny I paid extra to get a netbook with Windows instead of ubuntu/ *hangs head*

Well, I still think it's a good idea to have Windows too, because a lot of programs won't run on Linux and even though there are almost certainly Linux-equivalent programs, you may not get on with them so well, or they may not be quite as user-friendly (though again, it's not like this has been a huge issue for me - I've found most all of the programs easy enough to use). So it's always good to have options, but that's part of what I like about Ubuntu - the way it's easy to install as a dual-boot.

So yeah, I'd totally recommend at least having a poke around the system since you can remove it if you dislike it - I think there's also an option to run it from a CD to look around at the program without fully installing it. Though if you did want to install it (using above Windows-Installer method), it took me perhaps 25 minutes? It was very quick and easy.

Thank you for this post. I've been srsly considering a PC+Linux when my beloved mac finally packs up so your summary is very useful.
