My Top Ten Favorite Dragons

Oct 28, 2017 20:09

I've talked about how long I've loved vampires, and made a Top Ten list of them over here. I've talked about how long I've loved the beings variously referred to as faerie, elf, and sidhe, and made a Top Ten list of them over here. I've mentioned a time or two that my love of dragons undoubtedly started with my parents love of Peter, Paul, and ( Read more... )

Lots of good dragons. Ah, Kilgharrah. Merlin was good fun! Nice to see a Pernese dragon getting in too.

Lots of good dragons.

Thanks!

Ah, Kilgharrah. Merlin was good fun!

Yeah, I've seen John Hurt do a lot of things, but his having been the voice of Kilgharrah was still the first thing I thought of when I heard of his passing. I'll remember for a long time how much I appreciated Kilgharrah telling Merlin at the end of the show, "Take heart, for when Albion's need is greatest...Arthur will rise again."

Nice to see a Pernese dragon getting in too.

Thanks, again! I've gotten flack over the years from both Pern fans that thought I was nuts for not being a fan of one of the big metallics like Ramoth or Mnementh, and ones that thought I was nuts for not liking one of the little dragons like Path or Ruth. I always wanted a midsize dragon, a brown or a blue, and Canth is actually bigger than I wanted being as big as some bronzes, but he and his rider were my favorites in the books when I was reading them regularly. I lost a lot of interest when I learned how Anne had limits on who could Impress what kind of dragon.

The ending of Merlin was quite sad so it needed a little lift and John Hurt had a distinctive voice.

I was a big fan of the Pern books in my teens, but I would be more critical now. I'm glad I did as otherwise my reading of books with female characters in would be a lot lower!

I'm still surprised when I run into people who were surprised by the ending. I was a long time King Arthur fan so I knew how the show had to end if it was going to end anywhere near how it should. I appreciated hearing Kilgharrah say, "when Albion's need is greatest...Arthur will rise again," but I've learned for some people it wasn't much comfort.

I understand. I remember how excited I was when I first discovered a copy of Dragonsong in my junior high library. I didn't start to get disillusioned until I read Dragonsdawn, and even then I was pretty forgiving. I had to read in detail about how Anne imagined Impression being governed before the fun went out of the series for me.

I definitely need to ingest more media with dragons.

My first dragon was the Maleficent one, which was a bit scary to me as a kid. I think Smaug was second and it was the old animated film, which is what made me realize I don't care for the cat-styled dragons. I definitely prefer them reptilian.

*Grins.* If you say so I'll believe you.

My first dragon was the Maleficent one, which was a bit scary to me as a kid.

While I'm pretty sure Puff was my earliest dragon, I was four the first time I saw the Maleficent one. It was the 1979 theatrical re-release of Sleeping Beauty. That dragon and Vermithrax Pejorative in Dragonslayer are the evil dragons that gave me nightmares as a kid. I don't think I saw Dragonslayer in the theater, I would've been six at the time, but I think it wasn't more than a couple years later. It gave me nightmares at seven or eight. I can appreciate there designs as a grown up, but I can't forget how much they scared me when I was a kid.

I think Smaug was second and it was the old animated film, which is what made me realize I don't care for the cat-styled dragons.I like a wide variety of dragons, I mean with Falkor I have a "shaggy dog" dragon on my Honorable Mention list, but I have to say from the vague memories I have of that old animated ( ... )
