So what is the first, the basic level of equipment, a person should get if they want to film things?

Hubby says use your cell phone, get an attachment that lets you put it on a tripod (obviously, get the tripod) and download Filmic Pro, an app that lets you do that video thang/

Ah, I think we might have a camera tripod somewheres around home, so we might just need the adaptor for their tab A and slot B parts. Is Filimic Pro for beginners? I have decided that in the near future, in order to be a competent adult, a body is going to have to know how to film things and edit them together. And I am way behind on this.

What do you want to accomplish? Your phone will more than suffice for most amateur endeavors. If you find the sound quality isn’t meeting your needs you may want to invest in a separate handheld sound recorder, possibly one with an xlr jack, and a decent boom mic to plug into it. Zoom manufactures some decent field recorders. However, if you’re serious enough to want to spring for a better audio setup, you’ll probably be rethinking your video recording needs. You won’t want to invest too much in a camera without also investing in a lighting kit, and we haven’t even discussed editing and post processing software yet. It gets expensive quickly. You can always spend as much money as you’re willing to throw at a project. Be aware that most equipment depreciates quickly, and don’t forget that you can always rent equipment on a per project basis. Filmmaking is not a solo endeavor, and if you’re thinking beyond capturing the odd moment with your phone, you’ll need a crew. Joining a local film co-op will connect you with both equipment and ( ... )

I don't want to get too fancy at first, just get beyond loading 10 second videos from my phone held 90 degrees wrong into YouTube. Any low level editing software you would like to recommend?

You have an iPhone, right? Have you tried iMovie yet? I'm pretty sure it comes free with your phone. Based on your comments, I'd say try the free thing first and see how you get on from there.
