Tom Hiddleston has a definition of Compassion

Jan 17, 2014 14:48

Within all of us there is the capacity to be anyone, or anything, and that’s the place where compassion comes from, that understanding that I could be like that, if circumstances had been different. There is an Iago and a Romeo within all of us - there is that lover, and there is that sociopath ( Read more... )

Pardon me, but Tom Hiddleston is full of shit. Can't say I'm surprised; what else would we expect from an actor?

Have you seen the most recent Thor movie? I hear good things from folks, including someone who saw it in those crazy d-box seats. I found the first film to be beyond cheesy. In particular, cheese curds blew wildly from the screen during the Asgard scenes.

If you'd seen him say it, you'd have been mesmerized. Okay, I love his voice, so he could pretty much say anything, and I'd listen ( ... )

Did I say I was surprised? Not even slightly. I expect as much cheese on Marvel's Thor as I do on my pizza. I agree that it's an essentially cheese-based narrative. I won't partake if I'm feeling lactose intolerant.

As much as you're going to be tickled by the notion of multiple selves, I'm bound to be dismissive of fatuous generalizing remarks made by an actor. Hiddleston is not the first actor to spout this type BS on a junket, nor will he be the last.

I'll tell you a film that I did find disappointing, given all the hype: Spike Jonze's Her.

I heard some good things about Her - where does it go wrong? Directorial malfeasance? Schmaltz?

(It might be trite, but I agree with Tom H. - being able to imagine yourself as Other, even if it is an archetypical Other, is where compassion starts.)

Now that is an interesting take - was that the first thing that popped into your head?

Yes, it was.

I love reading you and the Doc arguing and critiquing. It's the most intelligent and funny stuff I read anywhere.

We did hash that out, didn't we. Yep, Dr Chaos and I butt heads like bored goats sometimes.

How long ago was that, do you recall?
