At the staff meeting today, the boss says she is leaving, but is keeping the date of departure secret. Best part? She also announced that two of the three other people in my unit are retiring as of October 31.

Does that mean you're the boss?

Heh, my question is basically the same as Sue's -- does this mean a possible promotion of some sort for you? Would you even want your boss' job?

Pretty sure it will not mean I am getting my boss' job. I believe that position will go away, the unit will be dissolved more formally and I and the other lady will float free to some other office. I guess they could get rid of my position; they can definitely get rid of the other lady and hire contractors, which I assume they have been itching to do for quite a while. My guess is also my boss was fighting them. Pure speculation on my part here.

So, this could be an opportunity to redefine your role, and negotiate a salary bump? When things shake up like that, one can often land in a better place. I hope things go well for you.
