My 75-year-old Dad and my sister visited last weekend to celebrate my aunt's birthday and my sister's all in one visiting binge.

I am amused that Dad in his old age has become a rule-breaker, but it's still in line with his primary character - what does this thing do, how do we solve this problem, how do we maximize or minimize something? He did it in his job for years and I think it's part of who he is. And when you retire, are a widower, the number of problems that need solving goes down, and you get time to focus on max/min problems such as: how do I minimize the number of loads of laundry I have to do ( ... )

We recently had one one of those smart meters installed. Does he have one? I can see your Dad delighting in designing the optimal power consumption schedule!

Oh, dude! I am so getting him one? That'll keep him occupied for weeks. He and a buddy from work were getting together and discussing SkyMap for like years after Dad retired, talking about how to maximize it, get that data out there.
