I had read a few years ago the sci fi works of Peter Watts, and commented on his favorite themes, etc., and that I was impressed that he was up-front about his atheism being fundamentalist, not amenable to even God appearing to his personally. I like it when people have self-insight, you see.

Shit like this is part of why I'm probably moving. I used to joke about it, but I'm starting to get more and more appalled by the things this country does.

I did that. The day Bush got elected the second time I said, "I'm moving to Canada." I had other reasons too, but yah, been north of the border for nearly five years. When you look into it, every national government plays dirty from time to time. America being the most powerful and influential makes it the obvious target for criticism. It's power also puts it in the position of setting precedent and influencing how other nations act. What I'm saying I guess is that though America certainly deserves criticism, don't expect to find yourself in a world of benevolence and justice if you leave.

I don't feel the same police presence here like I did in California. Never once been pulled over while driving. In California once a burnt-out licence plate and a 12 year old acting "suspicious" in the back seat resulted in guns pointed at my head and me hanging out in the back of a squad car for the better part of an hour while they searched my Tercel. The couple of instances when I've run into the police in Alberta, I've felt I've gotten off fairly easy ( ... )
