Ah, Birmingham (singing the Randy Newman song). Used to just hate that place (when my grandparents lived there) because the entire place smelled like a paper mill. Are there people reading this that don't know what a paper mill smells like? Good lord.
Bec, you were so close! Two and a half hours away from where I live! I'll have to take the Vulcan tour next time i go there. I remember the red and green lights on him, man, that was ages ago.
PS - I've been Reform Southern so long (and both Grandmothers have been dead for so long), I forgot what it's like to not have every single thing with added sugar. Yes, you do have to request UNsweetened ice tea.
Everything you mentioned, especially about the food, makes me want to go visit my cousins in Florida. However you've also made Birmingham sound very attractive. I must visit some day.
I'm used to tasting the water (born in a lake town where the tap water was brown, soft and delicious) and I don't like the way sugar takes away from the taste of brewed tea.
That's how I drank it growing up? We used to have iced tea with supper in the summer, and it was sans sugar so you could sweeten it as you liked, and I got used to no sugar. I sometimes will add a bit if the tea is bitter, though. But just how it was growing up, I think.
Yah, when I am back stateside for a week I will be downing as much unsweetened iced tea as I can. It was once my primary source of fluid, but in Canada, it is nowhere to be found. They don't even brew their iced tea here, they make it from pre-sweetened concentrate, it comes from a soda fountain or a jar of powdered mix. I enjoy as much sugar in my tea as can be found in a single wedge of lemon, but here it comes with a whopping load of corn syrup. And if you don't specify "iced" you will be served hot tea, even if it is midsummer and you are clearly sweating.
