Fun facts about the Métis!

Mar 19, 2011 22:00

 I actually spent a ridiculous amount of time today working on my History of Translation paper. I'm planning on writing about Métis translators and the numbered treaties in the 1870s.

Quick blurb about the Métis for those not in the know... Because everyone should be in the know about the awesomeness of the Métis. )

i am such a luddite, my thoughts - let me show you them, histories, scholarly pursuits, 1800s, true north strong and free, scribblings

Michif is cool.

Huh. I never bothered to learn the number shortcuts for accents. I always found the shortcuts like "ctrl+'+e" or "ctrl+`+e" for é or è much more intuitive. (But it is good to have a number pad if you use the number shortcuts, yes.)

...And I totally just copied my research notes files onto my memopry stick. XD

Michif is AWESOME. I've totally been exploring this super-awesome website that teaches you the basics of the language and culture: http://www.learnmichif.com/ It's where those videos came from, actually.

...I totally didn't know about those shortcuts! Why don't people tell me these things, Cassidy? ;_;

YES, BACK THEM UP. I INEVITABLY FORGET/PUT IT OFF UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.

:D

They don't teach these shortcuts in school, though I never understood why. They should! They're just something I figured out on my own, playing around on the computer (though a lot (but not all) of them are included along with the number shortcut if you click on the character in "Insert Symbol".) I always just ignored what they told us in school because I had my own way of doing it - that worked just as well.

Backed up! :D I usually forget, too. I need to set up a restore point on my laptop still, I think... (Maybe I'll do it when I have enough time... after finals?)

You can make restore points? I've never heard of such a thing before, but they certainly sound immensely useful!

On my old computer, I'd abuse Word's autocorrect. I'd write cliche, it would add in the accent for me like a good little program, and I'd delete the rest of the word and have an accent just where I wanted it. I had to actually learn how to insert characters for science lab reports, but I'd list them at the bottom so I only had to go searching for alpha/the degree sign/chemical compounds with too many subscripted numbers once.

That is super clever! I'd never have thought of using auto-correct like that... :3
