Trueblood: where the vampires are vampires

Dec 06, 2010 17:14

So as I briefly mentioned in my other post today, I'm at loose ends. When I ended off my last post with that video of one of my favourite scenes from Trueblood, I thought "hey, that's what I can do! Write a brief review!" But I suspect this is going to turn into something more of a "this is why I love Trueblood" with frequent reference to Twilight ( Read more... )

moving pictures, linkspam, my thoughts - let me show you them, sparkly vampires, omg vampires!, procrastination station, check this out omg

I can't decide if I'm interested enough to watch. I appreciate the thoughtful review, though.

Related, have you read Shiver? Seriously. My new favorite book.

Who's it by? If you recommend it, I should definitely put it in my "to read" pile. :)

And hey, if you're not sold on the actual TV series, you could try reading the first book, which is very well-written. The first one is called "Dead Until Dark", and they're by Charlaine Harris.

I sort of downloaded the books and have read the first two since last I commented.

I like the characters enough to make up for the way the plot goes all over the place, though. I also really like Bill (a very interesting character, with being a veteran and then a vampire and now sort of re-learning parts of humanity), and am very sad that apparently they are going to break up. Oh well. The second book ends very nicely, with the reconciliation and the memories.

Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater. OOOOOMMMMMGGG. I loves it. It breaks the genre cliche of having DRAMATIC TENSION come from a second/third romantic interest -- the plot is moved by far more complicated and interesting issues. *happy sigh*

Excellent. *steeples fingers* Yes, I agree - I do indeed like Bill. He's a much richer character than Edward Cullen will ever be, and as I'm studying the Civil War for my thesis those bits where he talks about his experiences in battle make the history dork in me smile.

Also, that book is now added to my "to read" pile! :D I <3 werewolves. :3

I agree that Sookie does have her annoying moments, and there are bits in season three that I'm like "meh" about, but the season finale was EPIC. :3

(Also: Eric is definitely preferable over Bill, although Bill does have his moments...)

For a presentation in my senior seminar about anthropomorphism, my partner and I used werewolves and vampires (and the history thereof) to explain why current definitions of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism don't quite cut it. A few people had cool questions about how other things should be categorized, one girl in the back raised her hand with some ridiculously specific detail out of Twilight ( ... )

I have to admit that Alice and Jasper are the only reason I actually read the entire series. >_> And yeah, the fourth book just... blew my mind, but in a bad way. :P On the plus side, maybe creepy alien-vampire pregnancy that kills you will only further reinforce the supposedly positive message of abstinence that runs through out the books...? D: (Nothin' like nightmares about alien vampire babies ripping through your stomach to put you off pregnancy...)

Oh, so it was more of a "know thy enemy" thing? Cool! ;)

I seriously love that remix. <3 Buffy has a perfectly reasonable reaction to the perfectly unreasonable, creepy actions of Edward!

The fourth book creeped me the hell out. The baby was quite literally (and actively, as I recall, but I've successfully blocked most of that book) killing her, that is a case where you talk about abortion and you talk about getting it done yesterday ( ... )

I am in complete agreement, with regards to that baby scene and Alice & Jasper. :3

"There are better books with better messages and snappier writing." SO, so true. At the moment, I'm particularly attached to the Temeraire series, by Naomi Novik, an alternate history - the Napoleonic wars, but with DRAGONS. I've been meaning to write a review of it for this blog, and I will perhaps do so next week when my exams are over. D: I also quite liked the book (not movie) version of the Time Traveler's Wife. Oh, and the 1632 series. :3 Other than that, I've mostly been working my way through historical non-fiction for my thesis. D: What reading has tickled your fancy lately?
