summary: the moon would hide behind her skull, the milky light causing the frayed hair along her scalp and two, ebony braids to glow like divinity, like the gods descended to dance in her silhouette.

There was a time, so long ago Leah’s memories are tinged in sepia-tone, when Emily had been her best friend. They’d tag along with the older boys when they went camping, annexing themselves to their own site a few feet away with a single shared tent and their own small fire. Howling wolves in the distance did little to pierce their bubble of warm firelight and laughter, giggling as they taught each other how to kiss and gossiped in hushed, reverent tones about the wonderful men who would someday love them.

Leah used to look to her cousin and think about how beautiful she was, delicate and round-faced. The moon would hide behind her skull, the milky light causing the frayed hair along her scalp and two, ebony braids to glow like divinity, like the gods descended to dance in her silhouette.

They knew nothing of the heartache and betrayal that would someday poison the air between them, where love and trust used to diffuse. But some childlike part of Leah thinks that those two little girls still exist untainted somewhere, even if it is only in the velvet folds of her memory.

Maybe there will always be a younger version of themselves tucked in each other’s arms, hope for an effortless future blossoming in their chests.
