1st: Get a trim. It will help with the coarseness by getting rid of damaged ends. It will also help your hair grow. 2nd: Decrease the number of times you shampoo per week. Using sulfate free if possible. 3rd: Leave in conditioner. I use a little bit of Aussie 3 minute Miracle on damp hair. You have to play with the amounts you use to get the right amount for your hair. 4th: Don't brush your hair. Detangle in the shower with your fingers or a wide tooth comb/pick. 5th: Don't use a towel, use a cotton teeshirt. Google Plopping. 6th: Use some sort of hair serum (this is optional, some hair types don't like this.) and your hair product of choice. 7th: Deep conditioner once per week: Aussie 3 minute miracle, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Aloe (from the plant or edible only), Ion (from Sally's)
I have wavy/coarse/thick hair, too! Too much straightening can make it kind of gross; the trick is to use the occasional deep conditioner (someone mentioned Aussie, yessss!) and lots of moisturizing shampoo/conditioner to keep it under control. Hopefully that'll help get the waves soft and wavy. :)
Two of my favorite products, though, are Aussie's protect+soften shampoo and their conditioning mousse. I don't know if they works for everyone, but I like how soft the shampoo makes my hair, and how well it lathers. As for the mousse, it's no help on the volume front, but does make my waves notably nicer (like, less frizzy, more defined... thank you, moisture!).
I use the Aussie protect and soften shampoo and their mousse and it smells good and works alright but my hair is still frizzy and coarse after using it.
