Straight to Curly hair--doable?

Jan 15, 2009 15:52

Hello. This is my first time posting here (just found the community). I have rather straight hair (with a hint of waves) and it's rather long, just past the midpoint of my back. I actually want to shake up the style a bit, having had the same style for... a long time, actually. (The style is the top of my hair is gathered and clipped ( Read more... )

Could heated rollers work in place of the curling iron?

And thank you!

I'm sure that they could - you'll get better volume that way too.

Actually either gel or mousse would work.

But there are some factors to consider:
Gel usually would be best for hair that doesn't hold a curl but can be 'heavy' so you will need to work and experiment. Mousse is best if you are adding body to existing curl.

Are you going to be using heat to create the curl? Old-fashioned (but highly effective) rollers? Or just trying to poof up what you already have? Those are the most important factors as to what product you should select.

I was thinking of using those... er... I think they're called heat rollers. Not really a fan of using curling irons so rollers would be best. I don't have much in way of curls, more of like very light waves that tend to droop.

Same here, and I've been wondering which products would be best for me because I'm a bit styling-challenged. I'll be watching this thread like a hawk.

Hot rollers! I love them.

If you have waves - I'd suggest getting a mousse (just grab something cheap when starting out). Now here is where my big hair days in the 80's (yes, I'm old) comes in handy.

On wet hair - add some mousse - about the size of an egg - and scrunch it in. Then dry your hair. Then take a little wee bit of the mousse, smaller than a golf ball, and rub it in your fingers to coat them in mousse.
Then - take your fingers and slide them up and under your hair to get to the roots. And work that mousse in.

Then put in your hot rollers. Let them cool completely, while cooling give them a mist of medium hold hairspray. Once the spray is cry - your should have bouncy curly hair!

If you want to keep your hair long, products like hairspray and mousse are not a great idea, and heat is even worse. All of it can dry hair out further. I only pin curl or rag curl my hair. Check for both at longhair, my pincurl tutorial is here: http://community.livejournal.com/beauty101/2300862.html
