I have a question about hair dying but it's a little specific and kind of weird. I dye my hair black on a regular basis. About 2 months ago I did the underlayer of my hair blue which was a lot of fun but major upkeep. I dyed over it in black and now it's showing again (the gift that keeps on giving!) so it's time for the black again. For the ( Read more... )

Why not just buy black dye with a red tint? You can't mix the different dyes: you have no idea what it will look like.
Or, you could go to a beauty supply store and buy a tube of black and a tube of red and hand-mix it with mostly-predictable results. that's what I would do. (I once mixed orange-red with blue-red and got a really interesting shade....but those are at least similar).

I haven't had much luck with box dyes that are black with a red tint. I may do what you suggested and take a trip to Sallys and see what I can find there.

Dye your hair black and then put the red over the black. It will tint it. I dye my hair pink a lot, and my roots pick up the color so that my natural brown has a noticeable pink tint.

This. Do the black first, then the red over the black. Veggie dye isn't going to mix with a chemical dye with good results. Just do it in two steps.

thirded. But to keep the veggie dye in better, give it a couple of days and wash the hair well first, and don't condition before you put the veggie dye in.

Also, get a darker red veggie dye, I prefer special effects blood red for my naturally almost-black hair. Much else doesn't take well, and other brands aren't worth my time.

My hair was dyed black for the longest time. What I was doing was I'd dye it, then after a few days, I'd put this on it:

I also did this when my hair was red to make it the color I wanted it. It's always worked really well for me.
