I really like Herbal Essences, the curly products are great. My hair's much less frizzy now that I only wash it once a week, with conditioner on other days/

For curly hair, have you considered conditioner washing? (co-washing) I use V-05 conditioners and my hair is soft and happy :)

Switching shampoos to a "good" brand will probably bring more frizz, at least for the short term. "Good" shampoos are generally sulfate and -cone free, which is better for your hair in the long run, but the issue with taking -cones out of a routine is that they weigh hair down, making frizz less likely. They also hide (not prevent) damage, so switching might make your hair look worse as the old damage is revealed. The bad thing about -cones is they can prevent oils and moisture getting to the hair, which makes it dry, frizzy, and prone to damage ( ... )

I wouldn't use coconut oil as a leave in. There are a few of us in the natural living group who can detect the odor as it goes rancid. It only takes a few hours too. Even if your sense of smell isn't sensitive enough to detect it, you don't know if you might come in contact with someone who does have a sense of smell sensitive enough to detect it, and believe me, it smells really, really bad!

interesting. I wonder if the difference is food and cosmetic grade. I get mine from a massage supply store and it's fine, but it's a little different from the trader joes food grade stuff my roommate uses to cook with.
What I buy has a shelf life of over a year, and I've never noticed a smell when used on hair or body, unlike many of the other oils I have (and I'm sensitive to smells and rancid oils, don't get massages because of it, and get migraines from all manner of things). Olive oil goes off really, really fast, and my almond and apricot get rancid in fabric pretty quickly as well. Coconut oil is a really common oil for use on hair, and I've never heard of it being a problem before now. My roommate has coarse hair and uses it frequently, even days between washings and never have she or I noticed any smell from it.

Yeah, you have to have a super sharp sense of smell. My husband can't smell it either, but it makes me sick. Like vomit sick. There's a few of us over on natural living who can smell it. Most people can't though.
