Urban Decay No Longer Cruelty-Free

Jun 09, 2012 01:13

I know a lot of women care about animals and purposely choose to buy cruelty-free products. One of the most popular cosmetics companies that has chosen not to test on animals is URBAN DECAY- at least they were until now:

It's extremely disappointing considering they haven't gone into markets that don't require animal testing at all, like Australia. I'm really annoyed at this move because they are being shady about the press release. They had it posted on their website yesterday but today they removed it in favor of a sentence saying "Urban Decay is planning on selling our products in China" which says NOTHING about the animal testing their products may have to go through.

THIS. So much. My first reaction was why don't they try with half of Europe first? Especially in Germany being eco would be a great sales arguement right now and our market is still not as developed as in the U.S. for example.

China has a booming economy and will probably be the world's top luxury/high-end market relatively soon.

She didn't tell the whole story. The company will still never conduct a single animal test. The government in China reserves the right to test a product one time, but isn't required to do so and many may never be tested. The company is still committed to fighting animal testing.

I looked at all the info and decided to continue supporting them. I wish the OP had provided all the info.

That's not what I have heard! ext_1269331 June 21 2012, 16:57:57 UTC
I have heard only that China *requires* animal testing. So, if UD is now selling to China, then that means UD products *must* undergo animal testing. Besides, do you really trust the Chinese government and legal officials?! I know I don't! If UD is selling in China, based on my research, this means that animal testing *is happening* now with their products. 'Reserves the right'--puleeze! That may be something China agreed to let UD put out to naive American consumers to make them feel better about buying UD. Sure sounds like something China would agree to--sure, lie, tell your existing consumer base China merely 'reserves the right.' We don't care what you tell Americans as long as we Chinese get to do what we want--including animal testing on your stuff.

Lie to yourself if you want to--but don't come on here and make it sound like everyone who is angry at UD merely doesn't 'have their facts straight.'

Don't come in here on your high horse and accuse me of lying, first of all.

What you're saying sounds like a weird conspiracy. You think the Chinese government is telling UD what to say? Seriously? UD KNOWS this is a meaningful subject among their fans.

I'm merely saying post ALL the information, not just use emotional language and only present one side of things.

Saying they're no longer cruelty free is misinformation. Saying they must do animal testing is also misinfomation.

Urban Decay will still NEVER conduct any animal test on their products.

Their products may be tested once BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT. And they may never be tested at all. The law there does not explicitly require it, only says that they may conduct a one-time test IF they feel like it.

So before spreading kneejerk reactions, take the time to link to info on and explain the ENTIRE scenario instead of emotion-based bashing. Let people draw their own conclusions instead of spreading false info. http://www.temptalia.com/urban-decay-press-statement-animal-testing-and-china <--- here's the statement they made ( ... )

It's not really false info in the OP, they are choosing to deal with China, which can mean animal testing. Their products will possibly be tested on animals, which makes them no longer cruelty-free.
