Overwashing your hair can dry it out and some people don't shampoo their hair at all. It's all a matter of personal preferance and hair type. I wash my hair every 2-3 days.

Burt's Bees, Organix, Dr. Bronners.

If you can't do without shampoo, at least choose one that has no sulfates [it's a type of detergent]. I used Organix before going shampoo free and I loved it.

I have semi thick wavy/curly hair. My hair was oily on top and dry at the ends. I also adjusted my diet [lots more water/fruits/veggies] which helped a lot. :)

I use L'Oreal Sulfate-Free line, and I have the same hair type. Worked well!

Giovanni is good for shampoo & conditioner. People like Nature's Gate conditioners but I don't know anything about their shampoos. Most shampoos have an ingredient call "sodium laureth sulfate" or "sodium lauryl sulfate", which are extremely harsh detergents that strip way too much natural moisture from your hair when you wash with them. When I switched to sulfate-free Giovanni shampoo, I began noticing a ton of new growth around my hairline, & the new hair feels a lot thicker & healthier than the old ( ... )

thank you for all the information! it sounds like we have very similar hair, mine is very thick and wavy as well, so I'd assume that I'd do well without cones either but what exactly are they?

-cones are silicones. They smooth down the hair shaft (like hair serums), but can coat the hair and leave it filmy (build-up). Some hair does well with cones, some doesn't.

sulfates can be more than the sodium laur(yth/el) sulfate above. There are also ammonium sulfates, which are harsher still than the sodium. There are also more ingredients that end in -cone than just dimethecone, and ( ... )

i shampoo my hair maybe once a week if that much, but i condition every day. when i do use shampoo i use a sulfate-free one, for cheaper shampoo l'oreal has a sulfate-free line. i also like healthy sexy hair's soy milk shampoo (& chocolate soy milk conditioner), sulfate-free and it smells aaaamazing. my hair is really really really thick, kinda coarse, super wavy and dry so shampooing too often (or with sulfates) makes my hair even dryer and more coarse
