But look on the bright side - you're starting in books, and authors still retain creative control. Even authors who open up the playing field, as in Larry Niven's Known Space Universe, still get final say in what rules must be adhered to, and get final say about a story being printed. Should it get as far as Hollywood, you can always negotiate then. And you have control to just not sign the rights over, if that's what you want. The difference between television and novels - and the difference between a universe and a franchise - make it much more likely that you'll get to treat your story the way you'd like.
