I just got the ENV2 from Verizon a couple months ago, and in my opinion, it's the best phone I've ever had (this being my 5th phone since I was 13). It's built for texting, which is perfect for me because with 2 exceptions, I try to avoid talking to people on the phone... don't know how big you are on texting, though.

i honestly dont think that the 'phone' part of the iphone sucks as much as att's network. also i found that edge had much better reliability than 3g. i used a 3g blackjack 1 AND 2 at the same time, and i dont really think it was that much better than the iphone. you may look into switching providers instead.

Sprint has been a good provider for me, and I've been with them for a year now using a Palm Treo 755P (the new one is the 800W and it has windows and gps)which I love. Before then I had Verizon for five years, and they were excellent but a lot more expensive for the same plan. The 800W is available with Sprint and Verizon.
