Doesn't Cafe Risque still have their other location in south Georgia off of I-75 between Tifton and Perry? The last time I drove to my parents' home in Florida, it was billboard after billboard after titty-filled billboard, from the Florida border northward and Macon southward.
I recall a Cafe Risque being advertised all over I-75 but I remember a location in Florida, just outside of Gainesville (good market, near UF). Exit 73 - Micanopy (to be exact). It was basically a shack with purple neon all over.
Not that I've ever been there, but during my college years (1993-97) I went to school in St. Louis & my parents lived in Ft. Lauderdale, so driving to & from for summer & winter breaks for a few years, certain things that stick out, you tend to remember.
To that end, I also recall a few billboards that read: "Jesus is Lord at Sheffield's Family Cafe", also around the GA/FL border in either direction. Helluva ad campaign there. I'm sure their Gefilte Fish is the talk of Tift County. Anything to distinguish it from the 47 Waffle Houses from about the 675 interchange to the GA/FL border.
Hehehe. My parents and I moved to Jacksonville in 1973, where my parents have lived ever since. It wasn't just the "Jesus Is LORD Cafe" at that exit (the first one inside Florida going south, I believe). It was also the "Jesus Is LORD Motel", the "Jesus Is LORD Truck Stop", the "Jesus Is LORD Pecan Stand", the "Jesus Is LORD Gas Station"...
Jesus Was LORD on all four corners of that fucking intersection. And still was in 2004, the last time I drove down thru there.
There are many, many, many reasons why my hubby and I sold our house in the Atlanta suburb of Tucker and now reside a little under an hour north of Toronto. "Stupidity of the locals" being one of the big ones. :-////
I spent years and years thinking that I couldn't escape, either. Then in late July, 2006, I did. First to South Carolina (Big Mistake!), then a year later to Nashville and Tennetucky (HUGE Mistake!), but now to a place where I'm legally married to my hubby and no more Talibaptists wanting to micromanage every aspect of my life from sex to when and what I drink.
