Last night I cut down the remaining plants in my garden, with the exception of a Geranium of Defiance that somehow didn't get killed off by the frosts. I left it standing. The others I cut into pieces and spread as evenly as possible over the plot, such that they can be tilled back into the ground and provide some humus for next season. It's sad to ( Read more... )

Something that dismays me about theologies (in many religions) is that they are so human-focused, and is part of the reason I am basically an atheist. Really, how do we know that plants or animals don't have souls or are part of some greater purpose?

I was actually moved to tears today by the song, "All Good Gifts" from Godspell.  I wondered why I would feel this way, since I don't feel any need to give thanks to a G()d who I doubt exists.  (Even though I live in Agnostic-land, I'm close to the border of Atheisia.)

The best I could figure out was that it was the combination of the harmonies with the idea of being grateful for nature, and the cycle of the seasons as human needs traditionally relate to them, planting and harvest.

'Course, it seemed lame-assed until I read The closest I come to something like a religious experience is how I feel about plants.
...which seems prosaic and profound, somewhat.

And just out of curiosity, if you doubt God exists, why do you use the underscore/bracket in the word?
