Aw Hell....

When we lived in Baltimore, David worked with mentally handicapped adults. He worked personally with a gentleman for 7 years there. He and I both grew attached to him and became good friends with his mother. Before we moved, she asked that David and I take over as Robert’s Trustees when she passes. About two weeks ago Roberts mother passed away ( Read more... )

contact your local Social Security Office 1st. The Claims Rep there should be able to tell you what steps to take.

or dial the main 800 number...1-800-727-1213

you MIGHT have to, they'll tell you what you want to do....it usually WILL have to be handled under the jurisdiction of where he currently resides.

the situation in kansas is about a 3 to 5 yr wait for services, unless it's declared an emergency. It's ridiculous, and knowing we are powerless to do anythig, well, pisses me off.

it's worse for kids, they start "transitioning" you at 14 here, bc at 18, you go to the back of the line.

I think you two must have the biggest hearts I've come across in awhile! BIG HUGS!

Not that I can offer any assistance, but hope this all goes well. Was nice to see David while he was up here, but didn't get to see him again before he left. As a result, I'm blaming him for my poor bowling scores last week.

Keep us all posted!

Okay, first things first. Breathe there. You can handle this.

The "Association for the Developmentally Disabled" that you mention, is this the only choice of agency there? I have several state and local agencies that I can call here, but the truth is what you have been told from the others. Services for developmentally disabled adults were woefully underfunded to begin with. The budget slashing has made things far worse.

I hear from my brother's caseworker once or twice a year, one time a phone call, and the other time a personal home visit, for case plan time. That's it. I can call and ask for things, and sometimes get services, but we rely on friends and family for an assist too.

Call the numbers. Look up every local Mental Health support agency, find out what services they offer and what funding they accept. Explain Robert's situation to them and ask for advice about contacts there.

Yeah there are a few other places that ive found like day programs which truly only provide them with something to do during the day because they pay them based upon the upon the unit they complete and hed have to be a workhorse to make any money for himself. There aree also housong places as well.

Is this a group home type of thing? Those can be okay if the staffing is good.

I was thinking more along the lines of another agency that will help you find the assistance Robert will need with various things, including employment, social activities, housing, food, and community involvement.

Hey Guys: I don't know if you knew this but my Great Aunt is mentally disabled and is in the care of the State of Florida so I wrote to my Dad about your situation (who you guys met one Thanksgiving). Here is his reply. I hope it is helpful for Robert ( ... )
